The first Helsinki Design Lab event was held on the island of Suomenlinna, on the outskirts of Helsinki. Then called the "Industrial, Environment and Product Design Seminar," HDL 1968 grappled with issues that fall into "no man's land." This trans-disciplinary approach was continued with HDL 2008 when the 40^th anniversary was celebrated with a new event in the same spirit.
